An extensive variety of excursions are available to sample the local culture and the famous Kenyan wildlife. The hotels are situated either on the North Coast or on the South Coast of Mombasa or at Watamu, further North of Mombasa. Diani's white beaches coupled with its peaceful tranquility form an ideal location for honeymooners. Breathtaking coral gardens teem with brightly coloured tropical fish and the tranquil Mida Creek at Watamu borders an ancient Mangrove Forest. WATAMU is about 170 kms. from Mombasa Airport with transfer time approximately 2 hours. You can get into Mombasa using any International Airline via Nairobi for your Coastal Holiday. From Nairobi you can fly Kenya Airways, African Airlines, Air Kenya or Eagle Aviation. You can also take the train or travel by road a distance of 500kms. MOMBASA - This is the largest and most popular Island on the Kenyan Coast, with a major Port and an International Airport. Its historical influence is still visible in Mombasa Town, which is a mystical mixture of ancient and modern. The Old Town dominated by Fort Jesus with its lurid saga of conquest and siege, the narrow alleys overshadowed by high ornamental balconies, and the vibrant bazaars, combines with the New Town to provide an intriguing potpourri of romanticism and practicality. Mombasa Island is split up into three general areas, North Coast, South coast and Mombasa Town. The beach hotels are located in the former two areas. SHIMBA HILLS NATIONAL PARK - A few kilometers out of Mombasa, sandy, coconut forested lanscape and a rise in altitude gives way to a beautiful topography of tropical forest with refreshing cool air and vistas of the Indian Ocean. Among a variety of other game, are Sable and Roan Antelope, Elephants, Buffaloes, Leopards and Syke who are at home in this park. MALINDI - Historically dates back to the 9th Century, with Arab occupation from the 13th Century onwards. It has been a rich trade centre with the near East and this influence can be seen characterised in its Arabic architecture. It is now a popular Beach Resort. The 1980's brought in a lot of Italian investment with many building their summer villas here, thus the recent Italian influence in the restaurants and shops. GEDI RUINS - Now a historial site situated 18 km. south of Malindi, this was a flourishing Arab Town between the 14th and 17th centuries before being mysteriously abandoned by its inhabitants. SHIMONI, KISITE AND WASINI ISLANDS - These Islands are tucked away off the tourist beat and offer secluded Resorts. Shimoni is the famous haunt for diving and deep sea game-fishing. The Shimoni caves were an old slave town, the Kisite Marine National Park consist of four reef hosting colourful sea life, and Wasini Island is an old Arab village renowned for its historical monuments and tombs. LAMU ISLAND - One of the earliest Arab settlements along the coast. Lamu has preserved its Architecture and a tempo reminiscent of the 18th Century. The ambience is maintained by the absence of motor vehicles. Donkeys and dhows are still the most common mode of transport. Skilled Lamu craftsmen create ornate doors and Arab Chest which contribute to Lamu's unique identity.
