  • MAURITIUS

Mauritius is located in the South Western part of Indian Ocean, forming part of the Mascarene Island chains. Its mild climate attracts rare birdlife and the Island abounds in species such as Kestrels, Bengali, and the "Paille-en-quene". Lush vegetation with rich growths of flamboyant Bougainvillea and Hibiscus trees, also flourish on the Island and it's lagoons are rich in coral life and colourful fish. Discovered by the Portuguese in 1505 and colonized in turns by the Dutch, French and English settlers, the Island gained independence in 1968. From the rich and event filled history, the Island has retained a delightful and fascinating blend of traditions and people.

This blend is most evident in Mauritius folklore, which is imbued with African influences especially in the famous "SEGA", but Indian culture and Chinese customs also play a very strong role. English is the official language, but most of the population speaks French and uses Creole for inter-community exchanges.

Rodrigues - which is a dependency of Mauritius, is situated at 650 kms. Off the north east coast of Mauritius accessible by regular flights, 90 minutes away. It is unforgettable introduction to an island life of peace and tranquility where time seems to have stood still. The beauty of Rodrigues lies not only in its sea but also in its hilly land mass with a mountainous spine running most of its length. Numerous possibilities of excursions and hiking await the visitors. The people of the island have still preserved a childlike simplicity and an affectionated heart with a distinct personality forged over the centuries in an intimate connection with their island.
