VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARK

Opened in 1929, this is the oldest and most famous park in Zaire. It stretches along the border with Rwanda and Uganda and was established for the protection of mountain gorillas. The park has expanded since 1929 and now has an area of 800,000 ha. Buffaloes, antelopes, hippos, warthogs, elephants, leopards and lions can be spotted in the park.
